Historic Environment Branch at Essex County Council has responsibility for creating and managing the INDUSTRIOUS EAST, the ERIH Regional Route of Industrial Heritage in the East of England. The Historic Environment Branch has a long history of researching and recording industrial heritage and industrial archaeology that has covered virtually every industry known to have existed in the County.
The INDUSTRIOUS EAST consists of 30 main attractions offering visitor facilities and symbolising the diversity of industrial history in the region, together with many more monuments and sites which tell the full story. It emphasises the importance of industrial heritage alongside the remains of earlier periods. Factories representing important architecture together with fascinating collections of industrial-age machines and consumer products can be visited. Walkways and cycle tracks already link many of the sites alongside our canals, railways and civil engineering structures.
Essex County Council is also a partner in the ERIH project which you can explore by visiting the dedicated website www.erih.net
