Application of Power
Apart from wood, eastern England lacks essential fuels forcing workers in the region to be pioneers in the use of natural power. Hundreds of mills in the windswept expanses of fenland and coastal marshes harnessed wind power for milling and land drainage. With the coming of the industrial age, wooden gears were substituted for cast iron parts and the taller, more efficient, tower mills were built with heavy 10-tonne caps housing the cast iron gears and controlling rotation.
